If you’re looking for a fun and different activity for your child’s birthday party, or even just a fuss free creative activity to do with them on a rainy day, then Party Teddies might be just what you’re looking for.

Party Teddies lets you host a build your own bear party from the comfort of your own home or party venue, and provide everything you need to make it feel special.

Dee and I were sent Moonbeam the unicorn to try out. She arrived with her head already stuffed, but with an empty body, and with her was a bag of hypoallergenic stuffing, a wishing heart, an adoption certificate and a gift bag.

Party Teddies provide all of this for each of the teddies you purchase and also include thank you notes for you to put in the bags to thank your guests for coming.

I put all the pieces together in the gift bag and presented it to Dee as a surprise. The fur is ridiculously soft and she loved the silky wishing heart. I chose the blue heart which represents courage, but you can also choose a red heart which represents love.

We’re both unicorn fans and loved Moonbeam’s sparkly purple horn, wings and eyes, and super soft tail.

In her back is an opening with a cable tie closure which is where you put the stuffing in. Dee came very close to pulling the cable tie closed before we’d started when she was examining her toy but luckily I stopped her just in time! Something to be aware of though, especially with younger children or a big group because no one wants that drama!

I cut open the bag of stuffing which is vacuum packed to save space. As soon as I made the first cut, the air started pouring in and the stuffing started ‘inflating’ which was cool to watch.

Dee had lots of fun pulling the stuffing apart and, to my surprise, got stuck straight in to putting in the unicorn teddy. I thought she’d faff around and get distracted but she did do a fair amount.

There is A LOT of stuffing though (so no need to worry about your teddy not being full enough!) and she got distracted after a little while as 3 year olds do. That meant mummy was left to finish stuffing which was fine, although the hole was small enough to make it a little bit awkward for my adult sized hands. It was still manageable though, and I think older children probably would have the attention spans to do it all themselves.

It took a little bit of thought to get the stuffing even in each of the legs, so some guidance might be needed for younger children. There is a lot of it though so even if it was a bit uneven I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t affect the toy very much – especially with the teddy bears or those that aren’t designed to ‘stand’.

When we’d put all the stuffing in, it was time to put our wishing heart inside, make a wish, and seal her up.

I explained to Dee that the heart said ‘courage’ which means being brave, and that she could make a wish as she put it in the unicorn and Moonbeam would look after her wish and keep it safe.

She willingly put the heart in and wished for…. slippers for me! I don’t think she quite grasped the concept, but she was adamant that that was what she wanted so we went with it!

I helped her to pull the cable tie shut, and then I poked the top of the stuffing pouch inside and sealed the velcro shut to complete our lovely unicorn!

Until….

Dee wanted her heart back and to check if my slippers had appeared inside the unicorn. Ummm… Despite my best efforts to explain, she was quite upset at the thought she wouldn’t get her heart back so I did undo the velcro and unpick the stitching on the edge of the stuffing pouch to retrieve the wishing heart. Little girl was happy again having her heart back but still kept wanting to check for slippers for the next couple of days!!

In hindsight, I probably could have explained it better, and rather than putting the heart inside the stuffing pouch which is sealed with the cable tie, I could have put it on top of the stuffing pouch but inside the velcro so it was more easily retrievable in case of toddler possessiveness issues. You live and learn…!

Once she got her heart back, she was thrilled with her new unicorn and gave Moonbeam a big cuddle.

It was a really nice activity for us to do together, and so nice to have such a beautiful, soft & snuggly toy at the end of it.

As mentioned, a party of younger children are going to need more adult input to combat shorter attention spans and navigate cable ties. I’m sure older children would have no trouble at all though.

I love the idea of having this as a party activity as it’s non-competitive so less fraught with tantrum danger (speaking from experience of highly emotionally charged games of pass the parcel and musical statues).

My favourite things about this product are the quality and softness of the teddy – I could happily cuddle it all day! I also love that it prompts activity beyond just passive toy giving, with children being encouraged to build it themselves and therefore get a glimpse of the materials and work that go into making their toys.

I was gifted this build your own unicorn kit for the purpose of reviewing it. All opinions are my own and reflect what I genuinely think of the product. Please see my disclosure policy for more information.
